The following programs are currently being offered by the Riverview Center, Inc. prevention educators.  Multiple programs may be scheduled for each grade.  Changes and adjustments may be made to better suit the needs of the counselor, teacher, or students.

Quit It! – Kindergarten through 3rd grade

This Nan Stein curriculum is designed to educate children in kindergarten through 3rd grade on teasing and bullying.  Respect, empathy, and problem solving are core elements.  The children role-play confidence and practice the six magic words, “Please stop, I don’t like that.”  The program is divided into two sections, one for kindergarten and 1st grade and the other for 2nd and 3rd grade.  There is a two-part program for each grade level.

Body Safety – Pre-K through 4th grade

This program teaches child sexual abuse education through the body safety rule: “No, Go, Tell.”  Children discuss private parts, comfortable, uncomfortable, and confusing touches, reporting, and secrets.

Internet Safety – 4th through 6th grade

This presentation focuses on what the Internet is, and the dangers which the Internet may present.  Risks on the Internet, which are discussed in this program, include exposure to inappropriate material, legal and financial consequences, sexual abuse, and harassment.  Students are given a multiple choice quiz at the completion of the program as a post-test activity.  This program is presented in . 

A second program, Cyber Bullying, is also available. We are currently implementing a new Internet Safety program geared towards upper middle school and high school students.

Bully Proof - 4th and 5th grade students. 

This curriculum focuses on bullying, harassment, and sexual harassment.  It identifies what is bullying and sexual harassment by allowing the students to brainstorm about the words, gestures, and physical actions they have witnessed in school.  It explores why people bully others and promotes problem solving to discover methods to stop the bullying behavior.    This program has an optional bullying survey and anti-bullying pledge.  Additional programs on bullying, empathy, and bystanders are available.

Flirting or Hurting –  6th and 7th grades.

This Nan Stein curriculum is used to educate students on sexual harassment.  The program is designed to be a discussion between educators and students on the fine line that separates what is healthy flirting and what is sexual harassment.  This interactive programs allows students to discuss the types of words, gestures and physical events that they see happening before their very eyes, whether it is at school, at home, or even in their neighborhoods.  This program is designed for students in   There is a 2 part program for each grade level

Expect Respect – 8th through 12th grades.

The program focuses on helping teens recognize and seek out healthy relationships.  The program covers respect in a relationship, healthy vs. abusive relationships, teen dating violence, date rape and sexual assault.  Each part of the program deals with ways that teens can prevent finding themselves in these types of situations, but also what to do if they already are.  The program is designed to be an interactive dialogue with the students, allowing them to lead the program based on what issues they see happening around them.  Each grade level consists of a two-part program.

Sexual Assault Education – Middle school and High School aged students.

This program is recommended for   It takes an in-depth look at the root causes of sexual assault.  A true/false quiz is administered to dispel the myths related to sexual assault.  Two types of sexual assault are discussed: stranger rape and acquaintance or date rape.  Statistics are given to educate the students.  For instance, 1 out of 3 females and 1 out of 6 males by the age of 18 will be sexually abused, 1 out of 4 females will be sexually assaulted in college, 1 out of 3 adult women will be sexual assaulted, and 1 out of 10 adult males will be sexually assaulted.  Perhaps the most compelling statistic is that 60% of sexual assault survivors will be assaulted by the age of 18.  These statistics prove the need for sexual assault education at a young, yet appropriate age.  The program also discusses what is meant by “consent” as well as the legal definition of consent in the State of Iowa.
